Jan 19 Meeting Minutes

Today, the main topic of discussion was the beginning of classes with the Woodlawn school on Wednesday of 4th week. Basil and Alex arranged the volunteer schedules and located convenient times to hold lessons. Alex called scheduled three sessions with Woodlawn for week 4. These sessions are:¹

• Wed 9am-11am
• Thu 12pm-2pm
• Fri 9am-11am

As soon as Alex hears from the Carnegie school, he will arrange one or possibly two more skating sessions for this school.

A secondary topic of discussion was the scheduled visit to the Woodlawn school on Thursday (Jan 21) in order to get acquainted with the kids and with their teachers. To make the best use of the visit, Basil suggested that it is a priority that each of the kids knows his/her shoe size before coming for the lesson. Dennis voiced the idea that during the visit the kids should be divided into several groups bearing the names of African American role models.

Niels discussed possible joint community service events with other groups on campus such as Strive and Giving Tree. Skating on Midway has contact people in both of these organizations.

Financial Matters (for treasurer only)

• The Woodlawn school has 140 kids and Carnegie has 40 kids. The cost of skates is $2 dollars and the program runs for 5 weeks. Hence, the cost of skate rental is 180*2*5 which is $1800.
• The cost of bussing is approximately $80 for each session. If our goals of having five separate two hour session blocks reserved each week for five weeks are met, then the total cost of bussing is 80*5*5 which is $2000.
• Our current budget is $1400 from annual allocations and $3000 from Duel Richardson's office. Everybody at the meeting today stated the desire to conserve as much of the money coming from Duel as possible by seeking to bargain for a lower price for bussing with the bus company Laidlaw.

Action: The main action is to begin scheduling volunteers for the three Woodlawn sessions scheduled to begin Wednesday of week 4.
